The term sanctuary comes from the Latin word sanctuarium and means a sacred place, but now it's being used similar to the term safe haven. That's the objective that cities like Philadelphia have, to be a safe haven for those who are undocumented from being forced out of the United States. To start 2015, there were roughly 50 cities which were labelled as sanctuary cities. Now, almost 300 jurisdictions across the United States have declared themselves as a place of sanctuary for non violent undocumented immigrants.
The rise in the number of cities willing to protect their residents grew during the 2016 presidential campaign. Donald Trump, the 45th president promised to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and build a wall separating us from Central America, which is thought to be where all of our "illegals" come from. The mayor of Philadelphia Jim Kenney has promised that Philadelphia will remain a sanctuary city, despite Trump and Senator Toomey's threats to cut Philadelphia's federal funding if they refuse to hand over undocumented immigrants.
Despite our status as a sanctuary city, people are still uneasy now with Donald Trump's victory. The fear of not knowing is at its peak. Our objective was to hear from those who are directly involved in this issue and get their insight on their status and Philadelphia's status.
